Development of
the fight

Suerte de Banderillas
This is the part of the 'banderillas' (75
centimeters long wooden sticks adorned with coloured paper and armed
with a harpoon-like point). This part is to stimulate the bulls
temperament, diminished by the punishment of the picador's 'suerte de
varas'. The placing of the banderillas is performed by the matador's
assistants or sometimes by the matador himself.
While two arm themselves with a pair of
banderillas, the third assistant protects the 'banderilleros' (those who
handle the sticks) with his cape. Because of the spectacular nature of
the act, it is one of the favourites of the public. There are many
different ways to perform this act, but the most important is to
approach the bull in a straight line and push the sticks in from a
height. To change to the third part, the 'tercer
tercio' the president shows his white handkerchief again.
